Burgundy Passport: Premiers Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin

NZ$185.00

It is with great pleasure that we can finally offer the first of our Gevrey-Chambertin classes. This commune boasts the largest number of Grands Crus in the whole of Burgundy (nine), the largest planted area and more than 80 families in the wine trade. It is linked to some of the most revered names, greatest vineyards, very old vines and different clonal material than other parts of the Côte. It is therefore unsurprising that we simply could not fit everything into one class. It also allows us to keep the eye-watering wines like Rousseau to the Grand Cru iteration which makes this class ‘relatively’ affordable.

To kick things off, we focus on its Premiers Crus. Divided by the Combe de Lavaux, its vineyards can be grouped roughly into the northern sector; which includes that most famous of 1er Crus, Le Clos St.-Jacques, neighbouring Lavaux St.-Jacques, as well as a clutch of vineyards which are arguably the finest part of the 1ers (Cazetiers, Combe aux Moines, Goulots) ; the section above the village (Corbeaux, Champonnet) and those which surround the Grands Crus, like Cherbaudes, Petite-Chapelle and Bel-Air.

The gamey muscularity of your typical Gevrey 1er Cru needs time to relax into itself, so we have also relied almost entirely on wines from the cellar to form this lineup. The focus is on more powerful vintages like 1999, 2010 and 2015 with a sprinkling of wines from softer years like 2007 and 2017. Ten premiers crus are on show, from ten different producers. These include; Domaine Louis Jadot’s famous Clos St.-Jacques 1999, Denis Bachelet’s Les Corbeaux 2007, Bruno Clair’s Cazetiers 2010, Vougeraie Bel-Air, Philippe Leclerc Combe aux Moines, Beaumont Cherbaudes, Trapet-Rochelandet Petite-Chapelle and Louis Boillot Champonnets all from 2015; as well as Domaine Fourrier’s stunning Les Goulots and Gabriel Tortochot’s Lavaux St.-Jacques from 2017. Join Stephen Wong, our resident Burgundy geek and Master of Wine as we dive into these special vineyards and uncover their character.
