A Morgon Conclusion

NZ$85.00

It will surprise no-one that the first Burgundy class of 2024 is about Morgon - a village which some would not even consider part of Burgundy! Our love of the artisans in Morgon who spearheaded the Beaujolais (and as a result, the natural wine) revolution is well-known and we have been collecting these bottles for as long as we’ve had access to them.

Of the two most renowned Crus of Beaujolais (Morgon and Moulin-a-Vent), Morgon is the bigger both figuratively and literally. Its wines most closely approach those of the Côte d’Or with a weight and structure which is unusual for Gamay. The infamous Gang of Four, as coined by Kermit Lynch, were instrumental in championing seriously made Morgon and by extension, a return to traditional winemaking throughout the region.

In this masterclass, we are diving deep into the wines of three of the Gang of Four; a mini-vertical of Marcel Lapierre (2021, 2020 and 2017); a horizontal of Jean Foillard (Côte du Py, Corcelette and Eponyme/Charmes) along with a 2013 from him which shows just how these wines develop. We also have the 2020 Vieilles Vignes from Thevenet and a set of Morgon lieux-dits from Jean-Claude Desvignes (two 19s and one 18). Eleven wines in total, this is more Morgon than we’ve ever done.

Come join us on this close examination of the Cru that started it all!
