Burgundy Passport: Beaune 1er Crus

NZ$125.00

Beaune is the beating heart of the Côte d’Or’s wine trade. With its iconic Hospice de Beaune and pilgrimage-worthy bookshop/wineshop and laneway bistros boasting encyclopaedic wine lists, the town of Beaune is also home to Burgundy’s roster of established negociant houses, great old names like Jadot, Bouchard Père et fils, Joseph Drouhin and more.

These houses grow, buy and make wine from up and down the Côte but also jealously guard old vine plots within Beaune in the best vineyards which are now synonymous with their houses. Bouchard’s Greves Vignes de l’Enfant Jesus, Drouhin’s Clos des Mouches, Jadots’ Clos des Ursules, for instance. The bustling town in the middle of the appellation has been a double-edged sword, however, as the vineyards here have largely flown under the radar compared to their more illustrious neighbours like Corton, Pommard and Volnay. Yet, the sloped here are home to a continuous line of 1er Cru sites which stretch from the border with Savigny down to the border with Pommard, and are home to some superb wines.

In this class, we will explore the wines which define the mouth-filling, complex and charming wines of Beaune, with their nuances, strong personalities and differences. We draw from the list of great names, including the rare white Drouhin Clos des Mouches 2010 and Bouchard Vignes de l’Enfant 2015, but also nearby Volnay legends de Montille and Lafarge (with a pair of delicious 2009 Aigrots in red and white!), newcomers David Croix and Caroline Morey as well as an enigmatic Champs Pimont from François Millet of Comte de Vogüé fame.

Join our resident Burgundy nerd and Master of Wine, Stephen Wong on a deep dive into the fascinating premier cru wines of Beaune. Seats are limited as we only have single bottles of several of these wines.
