The Light Reds

NZ$70.00

In the next installment of our shade derived, style conscious wine series, Caitlin Perlman will be taking us just one step beyond the vins de soif on the red scale: Light reds. As a term, light reds is often applied to all reds that naturally do not fit within (drumroll, please) full-bodied, or ‘big reds’. But light itself, contains multitudes. So, for our upcoming class on May 10, we will be isolating the light of the light reds; the pale, the refreshing, the ethereal, and the delicate.

As we did with rosé, and vins de soif, this class will contain wines from various pockets of the globe and will include an array of more esoteric varieties. Unlike the previous classes, however, this class will hone in more acutely on established regional styles with historical precedent - wines that have been, still are, and will continue to be light reds. This includes Schiava from the shadow of the Dolomites, Poulsard from the cool Jura hillsides, and naturally approachable Frappato from Sicily. These are wines made light by climate, grape variety and tradition more so than trend. To add some texture to the line-up, we will also include a couple wines, that in lieu of cool climate or delicate grape variety, have found workarounds to create lighter, oh so drinkable red wines.

There will be 9 wines poured on the evening from a line-up of producers including: Untermoserhof (Südtirol), Domaine des Marnes Blanches (Jura), COS (Sicily), Famille Dutraive (Beaujolais), Bodegas Forjas del Salnés (Rías Baixas), and País Salvaje (Valle del Maule, Chile). The nature of this class is to be a light hearted look at light reds - all levels of comfort with wine, and wine styles are welcome!
