Nouvelle 2020

Nouvelle 2020

Nouvelle is back! And in a turn of unforeseeable events, is not bigger than ever, but as filled with as much heart as possible.

The idea sparking Nouvelle was wholly unoriginal. Generations of winemakers have tapped into their newly resting wines in the calm, cool months following harvest. The wines; fresh, raw and marked with the indelible warmth of Summer, have long proven to be joyous and simple reminders to celebrate and look forward.

Originality aside, Nouvelle felt necessary. In our distant corner of the globe, we can find it easy to fetishize the great wines and traditions of lands across oceans. But right here, we have so much to celebrate. And while so much of what is produced here travels far, these new wines, these barely stable, raw wines are best here. The wines of Nouvelle have not been treated with preservatives to aid in seafaring; they are undimmed, uncomplicated and of the moment. They are intended to be shared amongst laughter and revelry, with old and new friends alike.

In 2019, we brought together wines from 11 organic producers across New Zealand and got a feel for what coming together mere months after harvest could be. For a moment, it was uncertain whether we would be able to continue in 2020, but thanks to a wonderful community of winemakers and friends, Nouvelle will be going forward.

The 2020 event is made of two parts. The first, is a one day celebration featuring as many new wines as we could get our hands on from across the country. This celebration will feature some wines that have been hand bottled in quantities less than a case and will be gone by the sunrise. This is the launch party for these wines and for wines of this style. A chance to come together and gain a snapshot of the 2020 vintage.

Following the launch party, a select number of the wines will be featured at venues within Wellington to be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. Bringing these wines out of the din of the party atmosphere and onto the table, with food and with care is a crucial step forward for Nouvelle. It is a chance to hold up this style of wine and celebrate it in a way that is accessible by all.
