Growing Garnacha

NZ$72.00

The exact origins of Grenache are contested with both the Sardinians and the Spaniards laying claim to the variety’s roots. What is known, however, are the waves in popularity that Grenache has been prone to; from it’s original expansion by the kingdom of Aragon to it’s 20th century status as the second most widely planted variety in the world and, subsequently, the ripping up of vines. Currently, the sun loving variety is making more styles than ever from a wide swath of the grape growing world. It is still the back bone of the full, spicy, Southern Rhône wines, but it is also making pale perfumed wines from Spain’s Sierra de Gredos mountains. There are extracted and deep wines from Sardinia, but there are also, delicate, fashionable natural iterations from Australia.

The current diversity of Grenache/ Garnacha is the driving force behind our class on Monday, October 16. Pulling wines from various continents, countries and philosophical spectrums, we will explore how modern Grenache is being treated and perhaps dispel some long held stereotypes in doing so. Concurrently and seemingly independently; from California to Australia, Sierra de Gredos to Swartland; Grenache is being treated with a lighter touch, bringing out its perfumed, elegant and refreshing side.

The line up will include wines from Mendall (Tierra Alta, Catalonia), Comando G (Sierra de Gredos), Ochota Barrels (Adelaide Hills), Cirillo (Barossa Valley), Alfredo Maestro (Sierra de Gredos), David & Nadia (Swartland), Tribute to Grace (Santa Barbara County, CA), and more.
